What we do
Formed in 2018, Memorial Gardens Association (MeGA) is a voluntary community organisation which aims to protect, enhance and promote the use of the Memorial Gardens on Victoria Embankment, Nottingham.
Our work involves collaborating with Nottingham City Council and other local organisations, and we do this to make sure the area can be enjoyed by everyone.
We started as a small group of local gardeners, but over time we have developed the organisation and now have a regular group of friendly volunteers who plant, weed, prune and tidy up the area on Monday mornings. After each session, we have coffee and cake outside (if good weather) or inside our community room, giving volunteers an opportunity to socialise further.
In recent years, we have:
-
Developed a wildlife garden, which attracts a range of natural species. We have regular visits from a wide range of birds, ladybirds, butterflies, bees and dragonflies. Our most exciting visit has been from a Muntjac deer, and we have a fox that sees us too!
-
Received small electrical tools training from Nottingham City Council, giving volunteers new skills and confidence in gardening.
-
Supported other outside projects. With the council, we helped prepare the Victoria Embankment Paddling Pool area before it opened in May 2025, and on occasion, we have also helped maintain natural areas outside Central Library.
-
Spent time as a group, and put on activities to thank our volunteers. These include pub visits with games of skittles, picnics and a trip to the Wollaton Walled Gardens.
If you would like to join us, send us an email at meganottingham@gmail.com or come along on a Monday morning at 9.30am.
