The Memorial Gardens Association (MeGA) is delighted that Nottingham City Council’s (NCC) bid to the National Lottery Heritage Fund for restoration and improvement of the Memorial Gardens has now been formally approved.
MeGA has supported NCC in developing its submission to the Heritage Fund and ensuring it reflects the views of users (and potential users) of the Gardens in its priorities for development. We have participated actively in the community consultation process leading up to the Council’s submission, and we will continue to work with NCC as work in the Gardens proceeds during 2022.
Although we have worked closely with NCC from the beginning of this project, it should be emphasized that MeGA is a small voluntary organisation with no formal responsibility for the restoration project. We are very pleased that some of the ideas put forward by our members have been adopted into the plans for development of the Gardens, but execution of these plans remains entirely the responsibility of NCC.
MeGA members continue to work voluntarily in the Gardens and we look forward to the extension of this volunteering scheme to a wider community as the restoration project progresses in the future. However, MeGA itself will not benefit financially from Lottery Funding and will continue to function as an independent community-based association to support the planned improvements in the Gardens.
We hope that the restoration project and the increased activity in the Gardens over the coming months will encourage more people to become active in volunteering in the Gardens. Although many MeGA members live locally we continue to welcome new members with an interest in the Gardens wherever they might live, and we hope the Lottery-funded project will continue to widen our membership to new communities beyond the area close to the Gardens.
