This summer has been remarkable in so many ways. Covid 19 has resulted in a massively increased footfall in the Gardens. So many people have discovered the Gardens for exercise and leisure, both during the lockdown and since the restrictions are being eased. Socially distant walks and meet ups have been facilitated in the beautiful relaxing surroundings, and now bigger groups of families and friends are meeting for picnics and relaxation in the glorious summer weather. Most people are acting responsibly, but litter and some noise, particularly from speeding cars and motorbikes continue to cause problems.
The proof that green space is vital and valued in our city has never been more evident!
The Council gardeners have been busy trying to keep the Gardens looking good, but have often been diverted to other tasks and priorities during the pandemic. The MeGA gardening sessions were initially abandoned but as the lockdown has eased we have resumed our fortnightly sessions and are weeding, dead-heading and planting at a social distance from each other. our volunteers are also watering the Bandstand plants, somewhat hampered by having to get water from the pond or river. Unfortunately, the flowerbed seems to be permanently sheltered from rainfall, even when the rain has flooded the paving in front of the Bandstand!
