As the gardens settle down for autumn, it is sad that in the hot weather we lost some plants earlier than in a normal year. However, happily, most survived and even thrived this summer. The Wild Garden pond is at its lowest level, but the plants appear healthy and are flourishing. There are plans to put in a rainwater holding tank that can feed the pond in dry times. Watch here for updates.
It has been so hot this summer that shrubs and trees have fruited early, which could be an issue for the birds this winter. Next month, we'll share some affordable and helpful tips on feeding our winged friends.
A big thank you to our MeGA volunteers, who have had to work on some very hot days, but as usual, are happy to keep the Memorial Gardens looking beautiful and a place for people to walk, sit, and enjoy, regardless of the weather.
To summarise the observations made in the Wild Garden over the past few months.
Robins, Hoverflies, bees, Dragonflies, Blue Damselflies, Cabbage White Butterflies, Speckled Wood Butterflies, Ringlet Butterflies, and an Angle Shades Moth. Foxes have visited the gardens, and there is evidence of hedgehogs. Last of all, who can forget the Muntjac Deer bounding about the Memorial Gardens and swimming in the Trent.
